Czechoslovak Writer Gallery 1950-1956

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the Czechoslovak Writer Gallery, operating under the auspices of the Czechoslovak Writer publishing house on Narodni street 9 in Prague. Initialy its space did belong to the longest working privately funded gallery Topičův salon. Its history is elaborated in the first part of the thesis. Topičův salon was created as an exhibition space of the Topič publishing house and operated until the year 1949. That year the Topič publishing house was joined with others to create one state-owned publishing house - Czechoslovak Writer. Topičův salon became the Czechoslovak Writer Gallery. A description of the activities of the gallery between the years 1950- 1956 forms the major part of the thesis. It describes a continuity with the famous Salon and follows critiques of the exhibitions in the press and captures a process of change of the critique of the visual arts.

The thesis will focus on period of the 5th Topič Gallery (Topičův salon) in the period 2008 - 2014, which was led by a big art enthusiast and philanthropist Mr. Pavel Vašíček. It will deal with broad historical context of the gallery, which was reopened in 2008. There has not been done any research into the topic yet. The thesis will be based on accessible archive documents, oral history, exhibition reviews and exhibitions catalogues. This diploma thesis presents compiled and edited collection of letters from the czech landscape painter František Kaván (1866-1941), a scholar of Julius Mařák's painting school, to the publisher and gallerist František Topič (1858-1941), the painter Oldřich Blažíček (1887-1953) and the librarian and bibliographer Ladislav Jan Živný (1872-1949). The edition is based on 104 letters kept in the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague and the Archives of the National Gallery in Prague. The correspondence describes a life of the painter from the year 1894 to 1941. The diploma thesis analyses and comments approachable literature and deals with relevant sources of material. Editorial comment summarizes principles and methods applied in this thesis, one part is dedicated to the editor Svatopluk Klír. The main parts are chapters based on commentary of selected passages of 104 edited documents with further relevant information in the apparatus. Fulltext edition of mentioned documents is a part of the appendix. A part of the thesis are indices and list of sources and literature.
